That was the common thread running through a reader survey we organised at the end of 2025. More than five hundred members took the time to respond. An overview of the most important findings.

The print edition is and remains important

The findings paint a clear picture: the majority of members are seasoned professionals for whom the print edition is more than a distribution channel. It is a tangible anchor point for professional calm, depth, and a sense of belonging to the association.

An older membership colours the picture

More than half of respondents are aged 60 or over. Only 13–15% are under 40. The results therefore primarily reflect the perspective of a mature, experienced membership base. This is important to bear in mind when interpreting the findings: this group is well acquainted with print and tends to use digital media in a functional, purposeful way.

The magazine as an anchor for attention

Approximately two thirds of members describe the print magazine as essential or important. For nearly 40%, the publication is explicitly part of the value they derive from their membership. Print is therefore more than a format: it represents calm, considered attention, and professional identity. The magazine invites readers to engage, away from screens and notifications. This also explains why a quarter of members view a digital-only future with some reluctance.

Digital: welcome, but with clarity and structure

Digitalisation is not being rejected outright. Roughly a quarter of respondents would be comfortable with a digital-only option, and a large middle group is open to digitalisation under certain conditions. The message is clear: digital must offer calm, clarity, and ease of navigation — not a rapid news feed. Requested improvements include: a single central platform, a robust archive function, editorial commentary on recent papers, and thematic in-depth coverage.

Risk of cancellations if print disappears

Should print be discontinued entirely, a cancellation risk of 6–12% is on the horizon. Beyond that, there is the risk that members who do remain simply engage less once the publication moves to digital. Attention, then, is just as much a factor as membership itself.

A hybrid model commands the broadest support

The analysis points to one scenario that best aligns with the current membership profile: a hybrid model offering freedom of choice. Members would be able to retain print, whilst digital is developed further into a library and in-depth resource. This creates room for innovation without sacrificing the sense of connection.

Print as premium, digital as depth. According to the survey, that is the course best suited to both today and tomorrow.

What does C2W | Mens & Molecule mean to the members of KNCV, KVCV, NBV and NVBMB?
