ICCECRICE 2026 Brings Together Teachers and Researchers

From evidence-informed assessment to the ethical use of AI: the joint ICCECRICE conference is open to everyone with an interest in the future of chemistry education. With the explosive growth of AI applications, the time has come for an intensive exchange between practice and science. Stefania Grecea, associate professor at the University of Amsterdam …

What is the ICCECRICE conference about?

‘It is a joint conference of the International Conference on Chemical Education (ICCE) and its European counterpart, the European Conference on Research in Chemical Education (ECRICE). There have been so many technological developments, particularly in the field of AI, that you can no longer ignore them in chemistry education. That will therefore be the focus. The conference aims to provide a platform where educators and researchers in chemistry education can exchange ideas and meet one another.’

What kind of topics can we expect?

‘The main programme covers more traditional themes, but as part of the scientific advisory board we have proposed including workshops and symposia on emerging topics that are open to anyone with an interest in chemistry education. This has resulted in a broad range of topics that still align with the conference themes. For instance, I am organising a symposium on evidence-informed assessment for generative AI with two colleagues from the IUPAC committee on chemistry education. We are still looking for teachers and researchers who would like to give a presentation at the symposium.

Other topics include the ethical and responsible use of AI in chemistry education, good practices for effective AI integration, digitalisation and assessment. You can still submit proposals on these topics. Alongside the workshops and symposia, our aim is to have speakers and organisers facilitate discussions on evidence-based strategies to support the teaching and learning of chemistry at both secondary and tertiary level. This is particularly important at secondary level, given the shortage of science teachers in this field.’

What are you most looking forward to with regard to the conference?

‘This is the first time I have taken part in such a large event focused on chemistry education. I know of no other event that offers such a wonderful opportunity to bring together practitioners and researchers in the field of chemistry education. That is truly unique.’

If you would like to contribute: the deadline for submitting abstracts for symposium presentations is 1 February. More information can be found on the ICCECRICE website.
