The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr Chris Slootweg, Associate Professor of Physical Organic Chemistry at the University of Amsterdam. He will address circular chemistry. Chemical knowledge is essential in order to make production processes truly circular. It requires new designs, including at the molecular level.
Other lectures showcasing the innovative nature of chemistry will cover the hydrogen economy, the chemistry of minerals in the Earth’s crust, and forensic analytical chemistry. New to the programme is special attention for technical teaching assistants (TOAs) and lower vocational secondary education (vmbo) teachers. The programme addresses the themes listed below.
Various industry representatives will provide, amongst other things, an overview of the current state of affairs within the chemical industry. They will address major challenges, such as high-grade recycling of car tyres and the sustainable production of paint. Current dilemmas relating to sustainability within the chemical industry will also be discussed.
The workshops for vmbo teachers will focus on, amongst other things, experimentation and practical design practicals. Participants will go home with concrete tools and resources. Additionally, attention will be given to teaching materials relating to process technology.
Highly recommended for TOAs is the workshop on a project in which pupils investigate air quality by collecting data themselves. TOAs can also get to work with bioplastic. During the workshop, participants will discover how the best plastic snack container can be made.
Newly qualified teachers will receive support with the obstacles they encounter as starters. They will learn more about their rights and responsibilities as a teacher, and will discover how to make effective use of practicals.
