Young innovation
Several awards were presented to the younger generation of chemists in recognition of their dedication and achievements. Pauline Schiks received the Golden Spatula for the best higher vocational education dissertation, and Li Wienen was awarded the Golden Flame for the best graduation report at intermediate vocational level. The awards gala concluded with Tarik Zahzah, winner of the Golden Master Award for the best master’s dissertation at university level. This year, too, three PhD students delivered their best pitch, with Chunyu Huang and her ‘chicken’ Thomas receiving the most votes. We can be proud of this promising new generation!
From molecule to market
The overarching theme of the evening was ‘From molecule to market’. All speakers shared their personal story of how they transitioned from academia into their own start-up. Marc Robillard of Tagworks Pharmaceuticals spoke about the development of targeted cancer therapy using click-to-release technology. Monique Wekking of Relement (see also the Eye-opener) took us on a personal tour through the bumps and hurdles of entrepreneurship, and Daan Luining of Meatable offered a glimpse into a future in which cultivated meat contributes to a sustainable food system.
‘Everything is chemistry’
The evening drew to a close with a humorous look at the world of chemistry. Berend Koen and Willem had the audience in stitches with relatable anecdotes and songs about misconceptions in chemistry. Because yes, ‘Can’t you see, everything is chemistry’, and Agnes Pockels truly deserves a place on a pedestal!
Connecting
All in all, it was an evening where people came together, not only for the engaging programme, but also to forge new connections and catch up with friends and familiar faces. That is precisely what the Avond van de Chemie stands for. We hope to see you back next year for the eleventh edition in Groningen!
