In February, the EuChemS Historical Landmark Award was presented at an altitude of 3,571 metres at the Jungfraujoch High Altitude Research Station. This award was established to strengthen solidarity amongst European chemists and to remind them of the history of chemistry. In addition, it gives the public an idea of the place that chemistry occupies within our general cultural heritage. The Jungfraujoch Institute received this award in recognition of the pioneering work and the exceptionally successful collaboration between the research group of Prof. Marcel Migeotte (1912–1992) at the University of Liège and the international Foundation of the High Altitude Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat Switzerland. Our current understanding of atmospheric chemistry and physics in the context of the Earth’s climate would not have been possible without the visionary approach of the Jungfraujoch Institute.
